Skin care routines are having more than just a moment. Once reserved for beauty bloggers, it seems like everyone has an elaborate multi-step skin care routine these days. And with the explosion of new products on the market, it’s never been easier to create a routine that works for your unique skin type.
Why do I need a skin care routine?
It’s a question that gets asked a lot. Artistry™ Beauty Squad expert Jenn Dockendorf answers it with another question.
“Why do I need a regular workout or a balanced diet?” she says. “When you think about it, it’s all about staying healthy. You do a little something each day and over time you see a big difference.”
Your skin, like any other part of your body, needs consistent care to look its healthiest. Yes, just like eating your veggies and exercising keeps your body healthy, a regular skin care routine can improve your skin and keep it looking healthy as you age.
Your skin cells are constantly growing and replacing themselves. But it doesn’t happen overnight — it takes skin cells 30 days or more to turn over and regenerate. That’s why consistency is key when it comes to a good routine.
Immediate results are rare in the realm of skin care, but by getting in the habit of a morning and night routine, you’re setting yourself up for skin success down the road. You wouldn’t do one set of crunches and expect to see defined abs immediately. The same goes for your skin!
“Sticking with your daily skin care routine is the fastest route to significantly healthier looking skin,” says Jenn.
What makes a good skin care routine?
Your ideal routine depends on your skin type and your personal preferences. At minimum, every routine should include a cleanser, toner and moisturizer.
The type of products you use depend on what results you want to achieve, but twice-daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing, plus sunscreen during the day, is a good place to start. Once you have those basics down, you can start adding products to address specific concerns, like serums, masks or acne treatments.
Sunscreen is especially important. Prevention is key in skin care, so wearing sunscreen regularly can help reduce future skin concerns.
Using a minimum SPF 30 facial sunscreen every day not only helps protect you from dangerous UV rays, it also helps prevent the appearance of dark spots and fine lines caused by sun damage. Plus, certain skin products like retinoids can cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun, making sunscreen all the more important.
How do I know my skin type?
One size doesn’t fit it all in skin care, which is why it’s important to tailor your routine to your skin’s specific needs. For example, a thick moisturizer might work wonders for someone with drier, more mature skin, but that same moisturizer may not be right for someone else.
Think of it like a workout — running might be your favorite exercise, while your friend with knee problems prefers yoga. Different bodies (and skin types) need different things to function their best.
Does your skin feel tight after you wash your face? You may have dry skin. Is your T-zone shiny at the end of the day? You could have oily skin. Want to target age spots? What about fine lines? Different skin equals different needs and different products.
