Award show season offers a lot of fodder for discussion: Who won, who was robbed of well-earned recognition, whose speech was the most controversial and whose sartorial choices missed the fashion mark and landed them on a “What Not to Wear” list.
Our attentions, however, were focused on the glamorous makeup the stars were wearing, win or lose.
Artistry™ Creative Director of Makeup Design Rick DiCecca watches the shows and loves to see the creations of his fellow makeup artists on the dazzling faces of stars and performers as they walk the red carpet with the hope of later taking center stage.
Rick spotted some trends along the way and offers his suggestions for creating your own red carpet look for your next night out on the town.
Bold lipstick
On the whole, Rick said he detected a subdued trend this year.
“The only drama was the dress or the lipstick,” he said. “There were a lot of bright bold shades of lipstick, but in a matte finish; very few shiny lips this year.”
The Artistry Studio™ 2-in-1 Matte Lip Crayons from the Bangkok Edition are ideal for recreating the look, Rick said.
“You can also combine them with some of the stains and other lip products from the new Artistry Studio™ Tokyo Collection being released in March,” he said.
Soft cheeks
There was not a lot of contouring happening on the red carpet, Rick said. Instead, he saw a “perfected bare skin look, semi-matte, with soft luminosity.”
“All the blushes I saw were within the natural undertone of the skin, and most were high up on the cheek to create that healthy glow—an effect that would happen naturally if you became flushed.”
The Artistry Studio™ Cheek & Lip Duo from the Parisian Style Edition can be used to replicate this look, he said, as can the Artistry Studio™ Oh-So-Cheeky Blusher coming soon in the Tokyo Collection.
Eyebrow styles
For most, eyebrows on the red carpet were well-defined and fluffy without going over the top, Rick said. “Much more natural than we’ve seen in the past.”
The Artistry Studio™ 3-in-1 Brow Shaper from the Parisian Style Edition will allow you to go as bold as you want with your brow, he said.
The tinted cream remedies any sparseness and holds the shape created by the built-in brush when applying.
Simple eyes: Less is more
Eye makeup tended toward simplicity, Rick said.
“Many eyes were softly defined, with eyeliner just along the lash lines and without a lot of graphic liner,” he said.
The new Artistry Studio™ Tokyo Edition Eye & Lip Beauty Box will be great for those softer looks, he said. “Those shadows will give you that soft definition—darker at the base of the lashes and lighter on the lid.”
Lush lashes
Lashes are always lush on red carpet, Rick said, and he offers five easy steps to creating them yourself.
- Apply Artistry Studio™ Mascara Base Primer from the Bangkok Edition.
- Apply one coat of mascara, such as Artistry Studio™ Lash Boosting 3-in-1 Mascara from the NYC Edition.
- Apply a second coat of primer.
- Apply a second coat of mascara.
- Apply a third coat of mascara.
“Now your lashes are blown up and red carpet ready,” he said.
