Two habits to change for weight loss success

We all know there’s no silver bullet to bring instant success in weight loss and health, or to keeping it off once we’ve managed to lose weight to begin with.

It takes a lifetime shift in our eating mindset and habits. We’re highlighting two of those habits that will help you kick start your weight loss journey: daily weigh-ins and meal replacement shakes.

Habit one: Daily weigh-in

It’s hard to manage your weight if you don’t know how much you weigh. Though it may seem overkill to step on the scale every single day, daily weigh-ins are a key tool to build awareness. This one habit helps you monitor how well your efforts are creating results.

Of course, it’s important to remember that daily weight will fluctuate up and down day to day a little bit, thanks to retained water after a salty meal, hormones or numerous other reasons.

But when you’re weighing yourself daily, you start to get a sense of when you’re just seeing a normal up-and-down fluctuation and when that needle is ticking up and up and up.

Sustainable weight loss is a journey

Consistency is key, says Kerry Grann, a principal research scientist at Amway who works on the BodyKey™ products.

With a daily weight marker, she explains, you can reflect on choices made day by day, making it possible to see how those choices may be affecting your progress and allowing you to get back on track.

“Success is measured by the journey,” she said. “It’s all about that feedback.”

Habit two: Meal replacements

When you first start your journey to a healthy lifestyle, it can be overwhelming. There is so much to learn, so many changes to make—right down to your grocery shopping habits.

Research shows that meal replacement shakes and bars can help kick start your weight loss. They’re also great for getting back on track if your daily weigh-ins are going in the wrong direction.

Easing into change

Perhaps the success from meal replacements is due to a removal of “decision fatigue,” which can result in depleted willpower and not so healthy food choices.

“One of the reasons meal replacements are such a great tool, especially when you’re starting a weight loss program, is because you don’t have to think,” Grann said. “They make it easier when you’re trying to implement a lot of different lifestyle changes.”

When you’re planning your day with two meal replacement shakes and one healthy meal, that’s just one meal you have to figure out. All the other decisions are already made.

That’s why some experts recommend starting with two meal replacements a day for the first four weeks. Not worrying about two meals a day provides more time to ease into those new, healthier shopping and eating habits.
