Having a winning season in sports or having a great year in business does not come from one single accomplishment.
It is the culmination of implementing successful strategies every step of the way.
Thanks to a partnership between Amway, USA TODAY and the American Football Coaches Association, University of Notre Dame Head Football Coach Brian Kelly shares some of his strategies for success along with some Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs).
Learning from recent wins
When you fail, you look back to see what went wrong and try to fix it. When you win, you look back to see what went right so you can replicate it.
When Coach Kelly looks at the team’s victories, he sees a common thread: continuity and consistency in preparation. That means being physically strong, technically sound and mentally prepared.
“When we did a great job there, we were generally really successful,” he said.
Amway IBO Candice Winston said she examines what went right and wrong, but also how her team worked together.
“Most importantly, remember the culture of what we had as a team to help us win in the first place,” she said.
Facing challenges
Challenges are a daily occurrence in life, sports or business. How you approach them is what determines your success in facing them.
“When you evaluate all the challenges you are up against, I think the thing you need to look at the most is what your own strengths and weaknesses are,” Kelly said. “You can spend all your time worrying about things that are outside your control, and they really don’t affect you. It’s what you do on a day to day basis.”
When Amway IBO Manny Winston faces challenges, he determines how to start by focusing on the end.
“In the business world, my mindset is: I know I’m going to have to go through a lot of failure, but I know at the end of the failure, that success is at the end of that tunnel,” he said.
Amway IBO Lisa Pakiela uses a similar strategy to stay motivated, whether there are challenges or not.
“Sometimes we can just be so focused on the day to day. But when you’re focused on the end goal and the end result and what you really want to accomplish, you’re more motivated to keep going,” she said.
